Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on the pulp tales of Robert E. Howard, John Milius's Conan The Barbarian (1982) is a sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a warrior who seeks vengeance on a cult leader (James Earl Jones) who massacred his village. Still his finest effort to date, Basil Poledouris's sweeping, thematic score functions as a continuous music drama, covering Milius's visceral film from beginning to end. Written for 24 French horns, strings, and percussion, the opening "Anvil Of Crom" features a noble theme for Conan and a melodic bridge emblematic of his quest. To represent the cult leader's twisted misanthropy, Poledouris composed a massive choral piece (inspired by Orff's Carmina Burana) adding Latin verses and Eastern elements to denote the Russian locale. Other highlights include a strong love theme for the physically well-matched pair of Conan and Valeria ("Wifeing"), a graceful, folk-influenced melody evoking medieval codes of honour ("Theology/Civilization"), and "The Orgy", in which Poledouris uses thematic repetition and melodic counterpoint to cast an obsessive, hallucinatory spell over Conan's assault on Thulsa Doom's chamber. A modern film-music classic, stunningly recorded and performed. --Kevin Mulhall

5.0 out of 5 stars A lavish score for a lavish film, 2 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Conan the Barbarian (Audio CD)
There can be no better endorsement of this score's quality than the fact it was used for the trailer for Gladiator, as no other music evokes so effectively the world of macho, musclebound warriors, the thrill of swordplay, and the romance of legend. This is real men's stuff, and the music pulls no punches in telling us that. From the opening narrator's intro "Let me tell you the days of high adventure", we know we're in for a thrilling ride. If you like your sword and sorcery exotic, lavish and totally committed, then you can't miss this soundtrack as it's arguably one of the finest around. However, it's not all battlecries and fanfares; there are some lovely melancholy pieces to offset the more agressive stuff. As scores go, this is simply brillant when it comes to creating another world and telling a story through music. Buy it - you won't be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully reflective score, 7 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Beautiful score, one that emphasises that Conan the Barbarian, despite its macho aspects, is also a very atmospheric and thoughtful film, as much about Conan coming to awareness as a human being as it as about his battles. While there are more energetic tracks such as "Battle of the Mounds", the majority of the score is very reflective, where Poledouris evokes the film's poignant moments of loss and religious reverence (such as his quotation of the Dies Irae in the "Orphans of Doom" track).

5.0 out of 5 stars Poledouris' masterwork, 6 Oct 2002
By Durnovaria (England) - See all my reviews
This is probably Poledouris' masterwork: a rich and clever soundtrack with both original themes and allusion to other works, notably the Carmina Burana and the Dies Irae. Listening to it in isolation makes you realise that "Conan the Barbarian" is a thoughtful and emotionally powerful film, its ideas carried not by dialogue but by the Wagnerian use of musical leitmotifs - representing Conan himself, Thulsa Doom, a love theme, and so on - that convey the character's moods from moment to moment.
